Nasreen Michelle Johnson

Candidate’s first and last name:
Nasreen Michelle Johnson

Have you established a written non-discrimination policy for your campaign or office staff and volunteers, inclusive of protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity?

No, but I will write one after the election for any future campaigns.

What are your thoughts on public employees having the ability to refuse to carry out their public duties without consequence when such duties may contradict their sincerely held religious beliefs?

Public employees should provide services to all members of the public.

Legislation has passed in other states prohibiting drag shows and similar LGBTQ+ performances. What is your standpoint on this type of legislation?

I am against legislation that targets individuals or groups based on their sexual orientation and gender identity.

What is your position on public libraries offering comprehensive, age-appropriate books/ material inclusive of sexual orientation and gender identity?

I am supportive of public libraries offering comprehensive, age-appropriate material inclusive of sexual orientation and gender identity as selected by professional librarians.

Do you support explicitly protecting LGBT+ students from bullying and harassment in state law?

Yes

Clovis Unified School District currently requires transgender students to get their parents or guardians permission to receive affirming services. What is your view on this?

I spoke in opposition of this policy at the CUSD board meeting.

What is your opinion on age-appropriate gender-affirming care for transgender and nonconforming individuals?

I support age-appropriate gender-affirming care for transgender and nonconforming individuals. It saves lives.

Do you support public funding for HIV testing, treatment, and prevention?

Yes

What do you plan to do to improve air quality and protect the residents of the Central Valley?

I support sustainable building and green infrastructure. I am proud to have supported a resolution to recognize International Clean Air Day by committing to fostering a sustainable and healthy environment both within our campuses and throughout the broader community by promoting clean transportation, ridesharing, electric vehicle adoption, the use zero and near-zero landscaping equipment, and other air quality improvement strategies.

What is your perspective on a woman’s complete bodily autonomy?

I respect complete bodily autonomy for everyone, not just women.

Are there any plans you would implement to address the issue of homelessness?

I support affordable housing and student housing.

Please share your views on the economy, job availability, and household incomes in the Central Valley and any plans to address these issues.

Education attainment levels in our community are some of the lowest in the state. Employment, income, and the quality of life for families are impacted. I will continue to advocate to reduce barriers for students, keep tuition and fees low, and create opportunities for student success. I will also work to expand hands-on training for students and develop partnerships and paid internships to help students make a smooth transition from the classroom to the workforce.

Our community colleges are a gateway out of poverty. I am a first-generation college graduate, attending Fresno City College to earn my AA degree. My mom graduated with her AA degree just one semester after I did. She took night classes, one at a time, for almost two decades, showing me that education is essential. Many students in our community college system are like my mom and I – first-generation students or returning to school while working and raising families.

I returned to college as a single mother of two young children and recognized firsthand the additional ways that colleges can support students in their success. I was fortunate to earn my Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and an MBA only because I had access to reliable child care (not to mention a bunch of student loans). But it shouldn’t be so difficult for students to achieve their educational pursuits while raising a family.

Working in the agricultural, manufacturing, industrial, and non-profit industries, I have a strong pulse on the employment needs of our community. I am continually assessing the types of jobs available in the community and that the programs and classes offered by the district not only fit, but complement our ever-changing world.

In addition to the hundreds (sometimes thousands!) of pages of information I review each month of items that come before the board, I spend time researching topics to understand the different facets of an issue. I want to know how other districts and communities are handling these topics so we are positioned to provide the best educational experience for students. I look at each issue through a variety of lenses to see how it will impact students, staff, faculty, and the community.
