Frank Rich – GAY BASHING AT THE SMITHSONIAN

You want to read something really insightful? Check out Frank Rich’s recent New York Times article, GAY BASHING AT THE SMITHSONIAN.

Not only does it deal bluntly with the recent controversy at the Smithsonian over an art exhibit that was pulled by the museum, which they claimed was offending patrons (patrons never complained, only Bill Donahue, of The Catholic League…one man who isn’t even affiliated with the Catholic Church).

The piece in question is by David Wojnarowicz, a painter, author and filmmaker. "A Fire In My Belly" was yanked because Donahue called the images of Christ included in the piece "hideously grisly", which morphed into "pornographic images of gay men". And this happened not because patrons complained, because they didn’t, but because one conservative website and Donahue stirred the pot.

Rich’s column is brilliant in its comparison of this recent travesty against the insane position of Senator John "I’m Crazy" McCain on the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell repeal. The message is that homophobia has become so accepted and watered down in America that it’s becoming accepted at the highest levels in the land.

Don’t miss reading this piece.
