“La Mala Educacion”,19 thumbs up!

"Bad Education," Pedro Almodovar’s latest film and one of the most talked-about of the year, played to enthralled houses this past weekend at Fresno’s Tower Theatre.

The film, starring Gael Garcia Bernal, Fele Martinez and Javier Camara, is a twisty tale of two school friends who meet again 20 years later. One is a movie director, the other has written a story about their Catholic school days. But not everything is what it appears to be on the surface. I’m going to say no more. Enjoy!

This was date night for my boyfriend and me. He suggested afterwards that the theatre should have handed out blank diagrams so viewers could keep track of the twists and turns.

The screenings were a joint venture between Reel Pride and Fresno Filmworks. The film’s distributor, Sony Classic Pictures, approached Fresno Filmworks and offered the group the opportunity to debut the film here.

According to Don Munro of the Fresno Bee, the Filmworks folks thought the Tower Theatre screeenings would be the only opportunity for Fresnans to see the film. Its subject matter (pedophile priests, cross-dressers, and gay sex) and rating (NC-17) made it doubtful it would show anywhere else in town. To the surprise of all, Bad Education will be playing at Regal’s Clovis Town Center theater beginning this coming Friday, March 4th.

My boyfriend and I agree–this film rates 19 thumbs up!
