The State of LGBTQ+ Rights and Protections in Today’s America

Last month, the Trump administration published the Fiscal Year 2027 budget proposal, revealing alarming prospects for millions of Americans who depend on government programs and welfare assistance. The Department of Health and Human Services received a cut of $15.8 billion dollars, the sharpest decrease among all departments. The initiatives dedicated to LGBTQ+ research and support suffered the most in the continued attack on the community’s rights by conservatives.

The administration intends to gut medical research on sexual and transgender health, along with housing programs and grants for people living with HIV. The Department of Education saw major changes as well, with DEI and LGBTQ+ student projects losing funding. The harmful policy of blocking foreign aid, which previously affected organizations that offer abortion counseling and services, now also affects organizations that promote “gender ideology.”

A staggering number of initiatives aimed at uplifting communities and improving the lives of the most vulnerable members of society were labeled “wasteful and ineffective” by the administration, which chose to allocate the majority of government spending to the military sector. The Senate Committee on the Budget has already held a hearing regarding the proposal, and the plan to enact the cuts and investments is set to be finalized by the end of September 2026.

Since Trump’s first term, the country has seen a relentless repeal of LGBTQ+ rights, protections, and aid. Empowered by the conservative, populist regime, Republican policymakers don’t cease their attempts to erase queer lives from the legislation on both the state and federal levels. According to ACLU, 528 anti-LGBTQ+ bills were introduced only this year.

In a recent attack, the majority conservative Supreme Court ruled against Colorado’s ban on conversion therapy, invoking the First Amendment. Oklahoma voted to ban legal sex change on birth certificates and pride flags on government institution buildings. Kansas approved a similar bill, going as far as annulling all official identification documents with altered legal sex.

While the outlook might seem pessimistic, some states proved that positive change is possible with community effort and competent leadership. During the latest legislative session, the governor of Wisconsin vetoed 5 anti-trans bills proposed by the Republicans, promising to do the same with any bill that makes Wisconsin “a less safe, less inclusive, and less welcoming place for LGBTQ+ people and kids.” In California, two bills targeting transgender youth have been defeated, a bill that intended to bar trans teachers from work failed in Kentucky, and no new anti-LGBTQ+ bills were approved in Georgia in spite of the predominantly Republican state government.

In the course of Trump’s presidency, the Republicans, time after time, tried to sabotage the hard-won rights of the LGBTQ+ people and erode the values of democracy, freedom, and fairness in American society, but their attacks continue to be met with resistance. This year might be the year when the balance of power finally shifts. The recent polls show that Trump’s approval rating is at its all-time low. The majority of Americans no longer believe in his ability to lead the country to the future he promised, and even the Republican Party’s loyalty started wavering.

Everyone who opposes the growing inequality, contempt for human rights, and neglect of Americans’ well-being will have a chance to fight back with their voting ballot already this November at the midterm elections.
